FAQ's realted to Gots

It is the process by which a textile operator such as a spinner, knitter, weaver,processor, garment manufacturer, trader, or exporter gets certified by an approved certification body to comply with the Global Organic Textile Standard.

GOTS is often called “registration”, but technically it is certification, not mere

registration.


GOTS registration is required for every operator in the supply chain, except

retailers selling to end consumers, including:

- Ginners

- Spinners

- Knitters / Weavers

- Fabric processors (dyeing, printing, finishing)

- Garment manufacturers

- Traders / exporters / importers


Once certified, the entity is authorized to:

- Handle organic fibres (e.g., organic cotton, wool)

- Use the GOTS logo and label (subject to approval)

- Sell products as GOTS-certified organic textiles in domestic and international

markets


Organic Fibre Content

  • Minimum 70% certified organic fibres for “GOTS certified”
  • ≥95% organic fibres for “organic” grade

Chemical Restrictions

  • Prohibition of hazardous chemicals (AZO dyes, heavy metals, formaldehyde, etc.)
  • Only GOTS-approved chemicals allowed

Environmental Criteria

  • Wastewater treatment
  • Energy and resource management
  • Environmental management system

Social Criteria (Based on ILO Norms)

  • No child or forced labour
  • Safe and hygienic working conditions
  • Freedom of association
  • Living wage expectations

Traceability & Documentation

  • Transaction Certificates (TCs)
  • Lot-wise production records
  • Input–output reconciliation


Access to international organic markets

  • Credibility and consumer trust
  • Compliance with major brand requirements
  • Premium pricing opportunities
  • Legal use of the GOTS logo


Using another entity’s number is allowed only for transparent consumer information, not for certification claims by the brand.

  • A brand doing only B2C sales
  • A brand whose turnover of B2B is less than Euro 20000


  • Confirm by giving a declaration is prescribed format.
  • File "Retailer's declaration for use of GOTS logo" to GOTS on retailer.declaration@global-standard.org and get a confirmation.
